Loveland Basin, CO
A new quad chairlift that reaches to the ridgeline of the Continental Divide near Eisenhower tunnel is the object of a lawsuit brought against the Arapahoe National Forest by a local environmentalist, who contends that it opened up a huge wilderness area to off-piste skiers without proper public approvals. Five years ago the ski area envisioned a surface lift for the area, but when snowboarding became popular it changed to a chairlift, which it believed would have less impact on the land. The legal action is pending in federal court.
