Gerg Wins in Cortina, Street Fails to Qualify

The new 28-person gondolas all lined up and ready to be strung. Freshly painted, these will be put on closer to December.

Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, Jan. 25, 2002 (AP) -- Hilde Gerg of Germany edged Austrian Renate Goetschl by one hundredth of a second Friday to win a women's World Cup Super G race in northern Italy.

Gerg's second win in Super G this season added to consecutive World Cup downhill triumphs at Saalbach-Hinterglemm two weeks ago.

American star Picabo Street, who trailed the winner by 2.61 seconds, failed to make the top 30 finishers and did not qualify for the Salt Lake City Olympics team to defend her gold medal in the event next month.

She remained in the finish area crying in the snow for about 10 minutes. Street has already qualified for the downhill race at the Olympics.

Gerg, a 26-year-old skier from Lenggries, completed the Olimpia delle Tofane course in the Dolomite mountains, in 1 minute, 17.20 seconds.

Goetschl was second in 1:17.21, then Austrian teammate Alesandra Meissnitzer at 1:17.40.

World Cup slalom champion Janica Kostelic of Croatia was a surprising fourth for her best career finish in Super G.

Two of the race favorites, Isolde Kostner and Pernilla Wiberg, fell and did not finish.

World Cup downhill champion Kostner, Italy's flagbearer for the opening ceremonies at the Winter Games, fell and skidded off a corner.

Wiberg hit a gate and crashed into the safety nets. She suffered arm bruises, according to initial reports.

The women ski downhill Saturday and complete their weekend Sunday with giant slalom.
