Skiing’s image is a healthy one. Snow-sliders tend to be robust, rosy cheeked, and toned from head to toe. To be sure, hammering through bumps is better for you than Buns of Steel any day. But just how fit are skiers, really? What are their health habits? We found out with a recent survey conducted right here on skiingmag.com. Here’s a sampling of what we uncovered. Eighty percent of the survey respondents were male and 47 percent were between the ages of 18 and 34.
78%said they could ski a full day and still walk the next day without limping; only 8% admitted that their ski pants barely fit.
26%have knee-injury stories to tell.
70%wipe down the StairMaster after sweating all over it — even when no one is looking.
40%are brown-baggers — no cafeteria chili-cheese fries for them.
72%stretch before skiing.
10%indulge in massages while on a ski trip.
80%never wear helmets while skiing.
38%wear sunscreen “most of the time”; 31% admitted to slathering up only “rarely.”
