Heavenly's New Ride Links Town To Slopes

South Lake Tahoe, CA, Dec. 26, 2000--In keeping with the season of giving, Heavenly Ski Resort opened a new high-speed gondola on Dec. 21, 2000 connecting South Tahoe to the slopes. The 2.4 mile-long gondola, the longest in both California and Nevada, all but eliminates the drive to the slopes.

"What we've done here is bring the mountain down to the skier," Said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Hal Cole.

Skiers begin their journey amidst the casinos and chaos of the South Lake Tahoe, CA area. Parking at the base area is abundant, or casino guests can choose to hoof it; it's only a five-minute walk from the Stateline, NV area.

Skiers and non-skiers alike can enjoy the amazing view the ride affords with an $18 sightseeing ticket. On the way up be sure not to miss the observation deck at 9,100 feet featuring an unprecedented 280-degee view of the Tahoe Basin (CA and NV) and the Carson Valley (NV).

The gondola ends in the midst of the Heavenly Ski Resort at the base of the Tamarack Express, which provides easy access to the summit. It should be noted that the gondola does not currently serve beginner terrain and it's suggested that beginner skiers enter the California side through the California Lodge.
