Mammoth Mountain, CA – The most widely recognized and prestigiousprofessional ski/snowboard series in the world, Jeep King of the Mountain, makes its first stop at Mammoth Mountain November 22-23, 2002.

For the 10th Anniversary Season of Jeep King of the Mountain, the seriesfeatures a new “Y” style race course and introduces women and snowboardingto the races. “This year’s races should be the most exciting yet,” saidEclipse President Henry Schneidman. “With so many new elements and anincredible race course, this season will really get our spectators and fansinvolved in the action.”

The new “Y” race course is uniquely designed to combine the technical skillof Parallel Giant Slalom with the cutting edge drama of Speedcross. Insteadof a simple fast track, the new design begins with a side-by-side dualslalom course. Midway through the course, the two racers are forced togetherand must navigate a single set of gates ending with a table jump and an allout sprint to the finish. Unlike years past, this year’s Jeep King of theMountain races are not based on times, but who wins the head-to-head matchup. Skiers and snowboarders compete against each other in a progressive raceformat where winners continue to the next of three rounds.

The first races of the series will take place on Mammoth Mountain’sFascination Course. Mammoth will host two race formats: the pure snowboardevent and pure ski event. Teams for the snowboard race feature one male andone female snowboarder. For the ski race, one male and one female skier willrepresent their country on each team. CBS will air the event on December 1and 14, 2002.

With eight Olympic medals, six world championship titles, over three dozennational titles, and more than forty World Cup victories, the roster ofathletes is the most electrifying yet. It includes the two top rankedsnowboarders internationally, Mathieu Bozetto and Olympic Gold (’98) andSilver (’02) medalist Karine Ruby, both of France. Joining them are 2002Olympians, Silver medalist Richard Richardsson (SWE) and Bronze medalistChris Klug (USA). USA’s Megan Gerety, World Champions Barbara Merlin (IT),Katharina Gutensohn (GER) and Lidia Trettel (IT) compete for the firstwomen’s JKOM title.

In addition to claiming the JKOM title for their country, athletes willcompete for over $450,000 in prize money and two Jeep Liberties for eachindividual winner in skiing and snowboarding. Infinity Sound Systems will goto the members of the winning team in each sport. Points are awarded at eachevent and are totaled at the end of the series.
