Killington Celebrates Spring With The 42nd Annual May Day Fun Slalom

KILLINGTON, Vt. (April 11, 2003) -- Killington Resort, home of the longest ski and snowboard season in eastern North America, will celebrate spring skiing and riding with the 42nd Annual May Day Fun Slalom, on Thursday, May 1. For 43 years, Killington has remained open for skiing later than any other Eastern resort. Forty-two years ago, Killington decided that skiing (and now riding) into May was an occasion to celebrate. The central Vermont ski area invited skiers to take part in a fun race, calling it the May Day Fun Slalom.

Each year since then, Killington has offered the May Day Fun Slalom for the first 300 skiers and riders, awarding each participant who finishes with a complimentary lift ticket for the following season. There has never been a charge to compete. The race is open to anyone with a valid lift ticket for May 1 or a Killington season pass.

This year's May Day Fun slalom will be held once again on Superstar, one of Killington's most popular trails, where snowmakers have concentrated their snowmaking efforts all season long. Known as the "King of Spring," Superstar averages base depths of up to 35 feet in the winter. In addition, Killington has received nearly 300 inches to date, of which three feet of that has fallen in the past week.

The May 1 Fun Slalom is limited to the first 300 participants. Each participant receives a voucher valid for a lift ticket during the 2003-2004 season (some restrictions may apply). Terrain is for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders only. Registration will be held at the Killington Base Lodge from 8-10 a.m. on Thursday, May 1. Racing begins at 11 a.m. with prizes awarded to the top three places overall. For more information, call the Killington events hotline at 802-422-1700 or visit the Resort's website at
