Mad River Glen, Vermont: Rank 13 East, 1997

If you've never been to Mad River, you're missing a culture all skiers should experience. Wild and tight trails, a quirkiness that comes from having the last remaining single chair in the nation and a ferocious breed of regulars combine to put this classic ski area (don't call it a resort!) on the charts year after year. Its cheap lift ticket price-$29/weekday, $34 weekends-earns it the No. 3 slot for value in all of North America. Drawbacks? Mad River's snowmaking leaves the resort naked during poor snow seasons. Summed up one reader: "It's the antithesis of Killington. Just you and the mountain, the way skiing ought to be."

What's New What? Are you kidding?
