If you’ve never been to Mad River, you’re missing a culture all skiers should experience. Wild and tight trails, a quirkiness that comes from having the last remaining single chair in the nation and a ferocious breed of regulars combine to put this classic ski area (don’t call it a resort!) on the charts year after year. Its cheap lift ticket price-$29/weekday, $34 weekends-earns it the No. 3 slot for value in all of North America. Drawbacks? Mad River’s snowmaking leaves the resort naked during poor snow seasons. Summed up one reader: “It’s the antithesis of Killington. Just you and the mountain, the way skiing ought to be.”

Reader Remarks “No wimps allowed. I’ve skied here for 25 years and I’m still finding new woods to ski. This is a real skier’s mountain.” “Need to improve lifts.”
