Major Bands Lining Up for the 2006 Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival

Whistler, BC (Whistler Press Release)—The largest free outdoor concert series in Canada will once again descend on Whistler with a killer mix of hip-hop, funk, rock and alternative acts set for this year’s TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival from April 14-23. Acclaimed performance artists Default, Metric, Jurassic 5 (J5), Blackalicious and Michael Franti & Spearhead are set to entertain a crowd of thousands on the Festival main stage in Skier’s Plaza at the base of Whistler Mountain. Along with over 50 live concerts, the legendary TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, also hosts major pro skiing and snowboarding competitions, mind-blowing arts showcases, endless nightlife and much more.

“This is just the beginning of a yet another wicked Festival concert line-up,” said Cristiana Spooner, Media Relations Manager for W1 and the 2006 TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival. “It’s shaping up with hugely talented acts that promise fans some unbelievable live performances”.

Default will open the Festival on April 14, with Metric on April 18 and Jurassic 5 on April 20 providing unique beats and melodic tones during the week. Blackalicious will set the soundtrack for the legendary Big Air Competition on April 22 and then on April 23, Festival favourite, Michael Franti & Spearhead will close down the main stage with their unforgettable live show full of phenomenal energy and powerful lyrical interplay. Artists’ bios and specific performance details are as follows:[pagebreak]· DEFAULT – Friday, April 14 (2:30-5:30pm) Platinum selling Default has just released their third album, One Thing Remains, which both re-establishes the band’s melodic rock sound yet expands on it in new and unexpectedly exciting ways. Among other memorable career highlights for this Vancouver based band are a Juno Award for Best New Rock Group, a Billboard Award nomination in the Rock Track Of The Year category for “Wasting My Time”, and an appearance on The Tonight Show.

· METRIC – Tuesday April 18 (2:30-5:30pm) Fusing contemporary rock and early-’80s New Wave, Metric was voted Favourite Pop Artist/Group at the 2005 Indie Awards and is once again nominated for Favourite Group/Duo at the upcoming March 2006 Indie Awards. This red-hot band was chosen by The Rolling Stones to open the two most prestigious shows on their 2006 tour at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Between performances at MSG, Metric performed on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.

· JURASSIC 5 (J5) – Thursday April 20 (2:30-5:30pm) Nominated for the Artist of the Year -Group at the 2003 Source Awards, J5 actually comprises of 6 members, four MCs and two DJs, which melded together in Los Angeles to create original and exciting hip-hop. Previously critically acclaimed albums include “Quality Control” and “Power in Numbers”, and with a new album set for release early in 2006, this group’s versatility is characterized by lots of turntable trickery and playful metered beats, creating a diverse sound appreciated by many.

· BLACKALICIOUS – Saturday April 22 (2:30- 5:30pm) After the 2005 fall release of their newest album, The Craft, which has been labeled “Hip Hop album of the year” by Timeout Magazine, Blackalicious has garnered even more attention for their promotion of a new “conscious” rap agenda. MC Gift Of Gab and DJ Chief Xcel create a quirky and eccentric face for this west coast hip-hop duo, mixing experimental alternative rap, dexterous scratching, cleverly executed lyrical acrobatics and jazz-heated production.

· MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD – Sunday April 23 (2:30- 5:30pm) Fronted by the enigmatic Michael Franti, Spearhead is a funk-based, positivistic, alternative rap band with a huge and dedicated fan-base. Renowned for powerful music with a message of social consciousness and a passionate male/female vocal interplay, Spearhead’s live performances are legendary.
