On Sept. 30, 2007, professional telemark skier and Warren Miller athlete Max Mancini was severely injured in a tragic car accident. While Max survived, albeit with very serious injuries, the accident took the life of Max’s girlfriend and Warren Miller’s friend, Molly Jackson.

The following is an excerpt from the Colorado State Patrol regarding the accident:

At 2:50 p.m. on Sunday, a black BMW traveling southbound on 285 crossed over into the opposite lane and collided with a northbound Lexus LX300, causing the Lexus to go off the road and roll two times. The BMW began to rotate and collided its right side with a red Toyota Tacoma heading northbound. The BMW rotated clockwise a quarter turn and came to rest on its wheels facing west. The Toyota rotated a quarter turn clockwise, rolled a quarter roll, and came to rest on its left side.

The passenger in the BMW died at the scene. Three people were flown by helicopters and two people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals with moderate to serious injuries. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.

Don Mancini, Max’s father, said that Max suffered four broken ribs and a compressed skull fracture, which required brain surgery to remove a blood clot.

As a result, Max was in the hospital for quite some time. Now he’s resting and recuperating at a house rented by his family in Denver, Colo., as the doctors have advised him to not go home to Crested Butte for at least six months due to its high altitude.

Mr. Mancini says, “Physically Max’s recovery is going very well. He luckily did not receive any permanent brain damage, yet he still suffers from headaches and general soreness in his ribcage. But he is doing better than can be expected, and he is mobile and walking around. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, and the family is very appreciative of all of the love and support shown.

Max, who grew up in Crested Butte, has made a name for himself as a progressive freeheeler who tries to encompass both park and free-riding into his skiing. Industry-wide, he is considered one of the most talented telemarkers out there. While equally competent in the terrain park, his favorite arena is the big mountain, where he finds plenty of opportunity to throw tricks off cliffs, cornices and jumps. Max has a full resume of films he has appeared in, including four by Warren Miller: Off The Grid, Higher Ground, Journey and Impact. Max is also co-founder of his own ski-film company, Falling Forward Films.

Josh Haskins, line producer for Warren Miller Entertainment, says, “Max added so much to the Warren Miller movies he participated in with his progressive telemarking abilities. His style and powerful skiing resonated on screen, and he always knew where the powder stashes were. Whenever we asked Max to be somewhere for a shoot, he got to the location faster than anyone else. His positive attitude and solid skiing kept him high on the call list. I’m looking forward to seeing him back on his skis and back on the big screen in future WME movies.
