Racers would insist it’s the Abfahrt Herren, the start of the men’s World Championship downhill course: At 45 degrees, it’s the steepest DH start in the world, a screaming pitch that accelerates competitors to 80 miles per hour. Unfortunately, it’s off-limits to the public. Civilians without skin suits brag about ripping Guinness, an 800-vertical-foot chute on the front side below the Piz Nair tram (which was financed by the Irish beer giant) that can be viewed from most of the mountain.
Off-Broadway: A mix of couloirs, ridges, bowls, and aprons, the Val Suvretta off-piste area would feel gigantic and eminently alpine even if it didn’t thread below an imposing jumble of 3,000-foot pyramids.
