St. Moritz, Switzerland, Dec. 20–Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) hung-up her best result of the World Cup season Sunday, finishing 20th in a super G with Italian Karen Putzer earning the first victory of her World Cup career in flat light and gusting winds.

Putzer had a time of 1:27.37 with teammate Alessandra Merlin second in1:27.43. Regine Cavagnoud of France took third in 1:27.60. Norwegian Merete Fjeldavlie came out of 44th start to finish fourth with Stefanie Schuster of Austria fifth. Clark was 20th in 1:29.08 and Jonna Mendes (Heavenly, CA) 29th (1:30.12).

The course was more of a giant slalom run, according to U.S. Head Coach Marjan Cernigoj, “so Putzer wasn’t much of a surprise because she’s a good GS skier. Merlin was a big surprise, though.”

Clark, who ended last season with two top-20s in St. Moritz but crashed in both DHs Friday and Saturday, once again skied well in the toughest section of the run – clocking the fourth-fastest intermediate, Cernigoj said. “It’s nice she takes some points away from this hill for Christmas,” he said.

“We didn’t have a problem with the snow, but it was voercast, a flat light. The bad light caused a lot of problems for people missing gates,” Cernigoj said.

Mendes had problems from the top of the course and never found the rhythm that pushed her into 12th place Friday in a downhill. Kjersti Bjorn-Roli was 21st through the last intermediate but got thrown off line on a jump, he said, and landed out in soft snow.
