Reader Resort Survey 2005: Midwest No.3 – Granite Peak
Features
Granite Peak, a barely-breathing relic a few years ago, is “quickly becoming the best ski area in the Midwest,” according to one reader. Just about everything at Granite is new: 60 of the 72 runs, 5 of the six chairlifts, including a high-speed six-pack, a second chalet, expanded base facilities and snowmaking on 100 percent of its trails. What’s not new is the superb 700-foot vertical mountain with its long Western-style trails and the ski town of Wausau just minutes from the base. “It’s the new Midwest giant,” touts a reader.
The Latest
A new triple chair, Santa, in the heart of the novice terrain; 50 percent expansion of the base facilities, including three outdoor decks; the new Lodge at Cedar Creek-five minutes from the ski area-with a 31,000 square foot water park.
The Deal
Third Day Off-half-off skiing and lodging on the third day of a multi-day stay (all major hotels in Wausau participate). Three-day lift/lodging packages for two people start at $335. Also, Kids Ski Free: adult/child combo ticket costs $108 for 2 days of skiing for an adult and child. 715-845-2846; skigranitepeak.com.
