Best for The Variety Seeker. The Canyons’ 3,500 acres of endless groomers make a perfect counterpoint to the serious powder stashes, chutes and glades at Solitude.

Sample no-frills New England skiing at crowd-free Mad River Glen, which boasts the country’s last surviving single chairlift and some of the hairiest terrain in the East, then rejoin the 21st century at Sugarbush, staying in dyed-in-the-wool Vermont villages such as Waitsfield, Warren and Fayston.
