LOWDOWN: Crunch’s 45-minute class relies heavily on gliders: nine-inch purple disks that allow for low-impact movements. Instructors learn techniques from Roberto Melani, a former ski racer from Italy, so training is consistent from New York to L.A.

LOWDOWN: The DAC’s class focuses on leg strength: lunges, plyometrics, and squats. Sprints, stair work, and jump ropes cover cardio.

New York Health & Racquet Club

LOWDOWN: Led by certified fitness coach and Catamount Ski Area instructor Victor Cabezas, this class is a nonstop workout that includes a 20-minute high-intensity circuit of plyometrics, cone work, endurance, and core exercises. Bonus: Students get exercise homework to do during the week.

Sound Mind & Body Gym

LOWDOWN: Olympic gold medalist Debbie Armstrong helped conceive this class back in 1988. She still consults and shows up to demo new exercises, which include hauling a 500-pound test line around with 50 people or doing gymnast springboard jumps.
