Eating Out

Most romantic meal on wheels: The Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train (603-745-3500), which leaves from the Hobo train station. Board a 1924 Pullman dining car at 6:30 pm and chug slowly around the Lincoln/Woodstock area for two hours while you dine on French and continental cuisine. Operates Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 25-31 only. New Year’s Eve is huge. Reservations recommended.

Best Place To Beat The Lunch Crowd

The Granite Grill in The Mountain Club. People forget they can ski Brookway to the door and bypass the whole cafeteria crunch.

Best Breakfast All Day

Peg’s Restaurant in North Woodstock, starting at 5:30 am (603-745-2740). Live dangerously¿order the chili omelette.

Kid Care

The Children’s Center (603-745-8111, ext. 5163) near the Governor Adams Lodge provides care for children 6 weeks to 8 years old. Children’s ski programs are offered for kids ages 3-12. A children’s rental shop is housed in the same building.

Best Insurance Against Quirky Weather

Loon’s Unconditional Satisfaction Guarantee promises that you can return your lift ticket by 11 am for a voucher to ski another day in the season if you are not happy with any aspect of the resort, whether snow conditions or liftlines.

Best Reason To Get Religion

Loon’s Sunday morning church service, which begins at the summit and moves, with the entire congregation on skis, to different sites on the mountain. Beginners are welcome.

Best Pizza

Elvio’s. No, GH Pizza. No Elvio’s. No, GH. You decide!

Best Reason To Hang On To Your Refrigerator Box

The annual Cardboard Box Derby¿the zany high point of Spring Fling weekend, this year March 21-22.

Best Reason To Ski A Green Even If You’re Mr. Extreme

Don’t miss Brookway. Yes, it’s easy. Yes, it’s flat. But it is an absolutely gorgeous cruise through the shadowy woods along an icy brook¿and it is the essence of Loon.

Best Reason To Hire A New Decorator

Rachel’s Restaurant in The Mountain Club serves fine food¿but it’s generic, charmless dining room is a turnoff.
