Keystone, CO – (News Release) – March 29, 2006 – First Candle/SIDS Alliance and Keystone Resort have teamed up to sponsor a unique ski event to raise money for SIDS. The originator and focal point of this event is Freda Nieters, a veteran ski instructor, former Norway Olympic team member, and all around skiing legend. On March 29, 2006, at 7 a.m., during her 75th year, Freda will ski 75,000 vertical feet at Keystone Resort.
In the year 2001, Freda skied 70,000 vertical feet and raised more than $13,000 for the Fredie Bear Scholarship Fund for the local elementary school ski program. Since then, Freda’s daughter Katie lost her 5-month-old son Zachary to SIDS. This tragedy has motivated Freda to organize an even bigger event for the benefit of First Candle/SIDS Alliance, an organization dedicated to reducing the threat of SIDS through information and research.
Both Keystone Resort and First Candle/SIDS Alliance have jumped in to support and sponsor the event. Keystone has made special arrangements including extending lift hours on March 29th since is estimated that covering 75,000 vertical feet will take 11 hours or 35-40 runs! After Freda has finished, Keystone Resort will host a reception for all the volunteers and supporters of the event. It is hoped that there will be many financial supporters that pledge the insignificant sum of only one penny a foot!
The Guinness Book of World Records also plans to monitor Freda’s Ski for SIDS event. She could set a world record for the oldest female to ever ski that many runs in one day.
Roger McCarthy, General Manager of both Keystone and Breckenridge ski resorts, said, “Freda worked for Keystone Resort for 30 years, so it is a special privilege for us to host this event. We have no doubt that Freda will accomplish the 75,000 vertical feet and enter the Guinness Book of Records; and we trust that the fundraising for SIDS research will be equally successful”.
According to Heather Boyer of First Candle, this will be the first ski event specifically for SIDS. Says Heather, “We hope that this event will be a model for similar events at other ski resorts in the future”.
