SKI contributing editor Ken Castle conducted more than 100 interviews for this series. He has been an award-winning environmental writer since 1968, when he served as the environmental beat reporter for a daily newspaper in the San Francisco Bay Area. He went on to serve as founder and editor for the outdoor sections of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle, writing frequently about environmental issues. While at the Mercury News and Chronicle, Castle initiated efforts to educate children about the environment and to preserve Lake Tahoe’s health. Castle, who lives in Burlingame, Calif., is also the author of Tahoe, a 670-page guidebook to the Lake Tahoe region.
