The festival brings together distinguished artists from down the street and around the world. Artown’s mission is to strengthen Reno’s arts industry, enhance civic identity and national image, thereby creating a climate for the cultural and economic rebirth of the region. The festival’s anchor events continue to be a mix of local and national excellence. Support from corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors enables Artown to bring some of the world’s greatest artists and performances into the community. And in doing so, Artown has given Reno a new reputation: that of a town with a vibrant artistic and cultural community. Once known as the entertainment capital of the nation, Reno hosted now-legendary singers, dancers and comedians, who performed to sold-out showrooms in casinos lining the banks of the Truckee River. But by 1995—after a solid run as one of the most dynamic playgrounds in the West—Reno showed all the wear of changing times and changing tastes. In 1996, a small group of individuals, with the support of the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, developed a plan to use the arts to improve the city’s self-image and give locals a reason to play downtown again. The idea was to highlight the community’s cultural depth, ignite civic pride and channel the economic and cultural rebirth of our city. Later that year, over three weeks in July, the first Uptown Downtown Artown festival took place. And to the wonder of all, more than 30,000 people attended. Photo Courtesy of Artown.
Artown receives major funding from the City of Reno, is sponsored by the Reno Gazette-Journal, Sierra Pacific Power Company, International Game Technology, KOLO News Channel 8, the Eldorado Hotel Casino, Altmann-Ott Homes, the Montage Distinctive Residences in Downtown Reno, the Nevada Mining Association, the Nevada Alumni Association, Washoe County and receives funding from the Nevada Arts Council.
