Salt Lake City, UT
–- The second stop on the 2008 Freeskiing World Tour arrives once again at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort March 18-23 for the 11th Annual Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals. This event is also the fifth stop on the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series. Registration filled in only two days.
The Snowbird competition boasts a total cash purse of $12,500, which should serve as plenty of incentive for top athletes to polish their performance before moving on to the final World Tour competition in Alyeska, Alaska on April 9-13.
With approximately 200 competitors attending the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals at Snowbird, the reigning Nationals champs, Drew Tabke and Aurelien Ducroz (who tied for first) and Jess McMillan, will have their work cut out for them as they try to hold onto their titles. Also in attendance will be the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Tour’s overall men’s points leader Griffin Post and women’s points leader Hannah Whitney. Other contenders to watch include local favorites Cliff Bennett and Tanya Christensen.
“The 37 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year has created plenty of new lines and natural features for the local and international talent to explore,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “All of the snow combined with the terrain Snowbird is famous for is sure to set the stage for a gripping, eye-catching big mountain event.”
The world’s toughest skiers push their limits on Snowbird’s steep terrain during the Subaru US Freeskiing Nationals. The event will take place on various venues in Snowbird’s Peruvian Gulch, likely including multiple days on different faces of Mt. Baldy.
“This new era of Big Mountain Freeskiing was born over 10 years ago with the first Subaru US Freeskiing Nationals at Snowbird Ski Resort. A decade later this event continues to showcase the skill, passion, energy, and soul of winter sports,” said Mountain Sports International President Adam Comey, “With the incredible season Snowbird has been enjoying this winter, I’m really looking forward to seeing these skiers pushing their talents in world class terrain!”
Located 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort is North America’s most accessible year-round resort. Snowbird offers five bars, 12 restaurants, 2,500 acres of terrain, North America’s only skier tunnel and averages 500 inches of snow per year.
MSI will present live a live webcast of the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals from Snowbird, beginning at 10am MST on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22, with a re-broadcast airing at 6pm MST. Be sure to visit the newly redesigned and recently launched
