Snowy Weather Leads to More Early Starts

Olympic Valley, CA, Nov. 20, 2000 (SAM Magazine)–A slew of ski andsnowboard areas from California to Maine, spurred on by early snows andcold arctic air, opened late last week and over the weekend to join theranks of resorts already operating for the 2000-2001 season. Solidaccumulations in the Rockies and the Sierra, and a combination of cold airand natural snowfall across the Northeast has also set the stage for manyareas to push up their scheduled Thanksgiving weekend openings.

Joining the ranks of those already operating for the season are SquawValley, Donner Ski Ranch, Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. Kirkwood Mountain Resort,Northstar-at-Tahoe, Soda Springs Ski Area, Heavenly, and Mammoth MountainSki Area, CA. Bear Valley plans to open on Friday, November 24.

Over thelast few days in Utah, The Canyons and Snowbasin opened, with Sundance projecting a Thanksgiving opening day.Because of recent storms in New Mexico, Ski Apache has begun operating withTaos Ski Valley, Ski Santa Fe, Red River Ski Area and Angel Fire Resort allset to open later this week. Colorado resorts that opened last week or thisweekend include Ajax, Snowmass Ski Area, Vail Mountain, Ski Cooper,BeaverCreek, Steamboat and Telluride.

In Minnesota, Afton Alps Ski Area, Andes Tower Hills, and Wild Mountain areoperating, as is Ski Brule in Michigan. Sunburst Ski Area and TrollhaugenSki Area in Wisconsin are also operating.

Hunter Mountain, Ski Windham, Gore Mountain and Whiteface, all in New York,plan openings this week. Tremblant Resort, Quebec, is open with MontSaint-Sauveur expected to open this week. A number of other Quebec skiareas are hoping to open this week and are day-to-day. Vermont ski areasthat are open include Stowe, Sugarbush Resort, Mount Snow Resort, OkemoMountain and Killington.

Those that plan openings during the week areStratton, Jay Peak, Smugglers’ Notch, Bolton Valley, Ascutney and BromleyMountain. In New Hampshire, Waterville Valley is operating, while LoonMountain, Attitash, Wildcat, Mount Sunapee, Bretton Woods, Cannon Mountain,Mount Cranmore, and Gunstock all expect to open on Wednesday or Thursday. InMaine, Sunday River and Sugarloaf USA are currently operating. And, in WestVirginia, Snowshoe Mountain expects to open on Wednesday.
