The Canyons is taking steps to keep Winter Cool and fight global warming through a number of initiatives. We are beginning to use solar powered lighting and we are purchasing 6% of our energy consumption from wind-generated sources within the Blue Sky Wind Energy program. Here is a summary of our environmental programs that will be featured on Sustainable Slopes Day.
General Information:
The Canyons has partnered with various organizations to promote both Sustainable Slopes Day and our annual Ski For Nature Day, a day to support the efforts of The Salt Lake Nature Conservancy
Various organizations will staff tables in The Canyons Resort Village to discuss the following environmental initiatives:
– Wind Power
– Utah Clean Energy Alliance
– Utah Power/PacifiCorp
– The Mayor, Dana Williams
– Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd.
– Wild Oats
– “Green/Clean Energy”
– RE Solar
– Park City Transportation
– Conservation and Sustainability
– The Nature Conservancy
– Utah Open Lands
– CARG (Citizens Allied for Responsible Growth)
– Recycle UtahAdditional Programs will include:
Wind Power Signup- Utah Clean Energy Alliance Staff on hand to sign up guests for wind power. Each guest that signs up for wind power will receive a $20 Off Voucher for The Canyons from Pacificorp.
Environmental Trivia Sheet- each individual that fills one out will be entered in our Black Diamond Raffle!
We Care About Carpooling-Mountain Hosts to hand-out Balance Bars, stickers to carpoolers
Sustainable Slopes Table Tents-Red Pine, Sun Lodge, Canyon Mountain Sports, and Canyons Rental Areas (along with pre-existing merchandising messages)
Environmental Surveys- Canyons employees will find out our guest’s environmental concerns and goals by conducting environmental surveys at Red Pine from 11:00am – 1:00pm
Mountain Eco-tours- Integrate environmental accomplishments into daily “Mountain Host Tours”
NEW Preserving our Peaks Coloring Book- Your friend Mogul Moose discusses environmental programs at The Canyons
Coloring contest/environmental poster contest- Little Adventures Day Care/Perfect Kids, local daycares, and local schools. All entries will be displayed in our “Decorating (and Protecting) Our World” Gallery in the ForumCanyons Employees will be on staff to discuss current environmental initiatives such as:
Donating 600 Perfect Turn jackets to Eagle Ranch Shelter in 2003
Purchasing a Solvent-Free Parts Washer
Implementing Office Recycling and Investigating of an On-Mountain Recycling Program
Drafting the First Environmental Report
Purchasing 6% of Electricity in the form of Blue Sky Wind Energy
Providing financing for Regional Transportation System to extend to Kimball Junction
Choosing Solar Powered Lighting for new Canyons Bus Shelter
Drafting Low Impact Recreation Principles on Trail Map
Transplanting 30 trees from a future construction site for future landscaping uses
Purchasing a new fleet of vehicles, snowcats and snowmobiles
Investigating a pilot program using Bio Diesel for snowcats
Placing numerous land parcels in Conservation Easements and Expanding Areas of Public Use
Employing sustainable building practices – glading vs. clear cutting, Construction Mitigation Management
Protecting wildlife habitat, wildlife corridors, critical wetland areas, roadless areas
Increasing recreational value of resort by constructing mountain biking, hiking, and snow shoeing trails
