Sweden to host 2007 FIS championships

PORTOROZ, Slovenia (AP) – Are, Sweden will have the Alpine World Skiing Championships and Sapporo, Japan gets the Nordic skiing world championships in 2007, the International Ski Federation decided Thursday.

Are and Val d’Isere of France were tied in the first round of voting. Sweden prevailed in the second round, getting 11 out of 17 votes of the federation members.

Lillehammer, Norway, the site of the 1994 Olympic Games, was out in the first round.

Are, located 310 miles northwest of Stockholm, last held the world championships in 1954.

Sapporo, which hosted the winter Olympics 30 years ago, was chosen over Liberec, in the Czech Republic, for the Nordic skiing world championships. It received 10 votes.

The Federation decisions came at its annual congress held this year in this Slovene coastal city.
