Top slalom racer Kristina Koznick skis for the U.S. Ski Team, but she’s not on the team. Last spring, the team fired coach Dan Stripp, who had a close relationship with Koz. Enraged, Koz left the team so she could compete on the World Cup circuit on her own, with Stripp as her coach.
But thanks to World Cup regulations, Koz can only enter Cup races with the blessing of the Ski Team, which agreed — but only if she paid her own way. To support her campaign (cost: about $150,000 a year), Koz is raising money online at www.koznick.com. Anyone (say, you) can contribute.
Early results paid dividends. Koz finished third in the season’s second World Cup slalom and was in the hunt for the overall slalom title, her season’s goal.
