The Lodge

Mountain Life

Deer Valley, Utah

This enormous timber-frame home, referred to as The Lodge, was made with handpicked stone from Utah’s Wasatch Mountains and reclaimed trestle wood from the 1903 Lucian Cutoff Railroad, which crossed the Great Salt Lake. The exterior was crafted from redwood and the interior from two types of fir. The home has seven bedrooms, eight-and-a-half bathrooms and includes a separate caretaker’s apartment. The master bedroom has a two-way fireplace, a study, and his-and-hers baths.

As you enter the 12,223-square-foot home through French walnut antique doors with original hardware, you find yourself in a place that is designed to host multiple guests. But as big as it is, it maintains a homey feel and rustic charm. There are nine custom-built rock fireplaces in the house and a large sauna located next to the ski-prep room. To soothe your ski legs, there’s also a custom-designed hot tub room made of native stone, featuring a waterfall, a fireplace and sliding doors to view Bald Mountain. If your quads shy away from the stairs, you can take an elevator.

To help you stay warm and dry, there is radiant heating throughout. The driveway, garage and lower decks are also heated. This home is equipped to entertain. There is a large professionally designed theater room with acoustical walls and ceiling and a wet bar, as well as a wine cellar with stone and wood wine racks.

A glass ceiling allows you to view it from above. The gourmet kitchen features granite countertops, a Wolfe range/oven, twin SubZero refrigerator/freezers and two dishwashers. The laundry room has two washers and two dryers. The great room offers vaulted ceilings, a floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace and clear views of Bald Mountain. The Lodge is a veritable B&B, but it’s up to you whether to charge your guests.

Ski right out the back doors to Deer Crest at Deer Valley, which consists of seven ski runs and 12 trails-all groomed and covered by snowmaking.

The price. The maintenance. And the home’s limited resale-ability. A small percentage of skiers could afford such a huge house.
