Located three miles north of Durango Mountain Resort, Mill Creek Lodge Estates is the latest development in this area’s rich history. The site was once a stagecoach stopover from Durango to the mining town of Silverton. In the Fifties, the original Lodge was built and the owners installed a rope system to tow skiers to the top of Coal Bank Pass. It served as the region’s only ski area until Purgatory opened in 1965.
The old corrals and other hints of history still exist on the property, but the original building burned in the mid-Seventies. New owners rebuilt the 3,900-square-foot lodge -now the centerpiece of 80-acre Mill Creek Lodge Estates-which was run as an inn until last year.
Each of the 11 properties in Mill Creek Lodge Estates is being sold as fractional ownership in seventh shares, with undivided interest in fee simple title. That gives each owner all tax benefits and legal right of property ownership. Only one 1/7 interest is available in the Lodge, but five of the 10 lots (from 3.5 to 5.5 acres) are still for sale.
