SKIING’s interview with Philippe Bélanger, one of the top 25 skiers in North America.
Name: Philippe Bélanger
Age you started skiing: Three
Home ski area: Le Relais, Quebec
Known for: Part of the next wave of jibbers spawned by the New Canadian Air Force, the “Three Philippes” (Bélanger, Larose, and Dion) shared the top prize at last year’s Upright Big Air competition — and as a unit became the ski-marketing gimmick of the year. Bélanger stands out from the troika for the difficulty of his tricks — like the corkscrew 720 — and the seemingly impossible length of his curving rail slides.
When did it hit you that you could be a pro skiers? “After a competition in Tremblant, Quebec. Dynstar said they would pay for all my expenses.”
Do you have any pets? “A cat, female, named Capacne.”
What’s your favorite food? Spaghetti
What’s your beverage of choice? Mountain Dew
What’s your favorite band or musician? Wyclef Jean
What car do you drive? Honda Civic SE91
The last book you read? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Do you have a ski hero? “Glen Plake because he was the first guy I saw in movies and magazines.”
Movies you’ve been in: 13, The Realm, The Game, Further, Los Alamos
Pastimes off the hill: “Chillin’ with friends.”
Plans for the future: “Do my best in skiing — hey, as long as I’m in the top 25, right? And possibly become a rep for Dynastar afterward.”
Fat skis? “Yeah, good for powder.”
Any words of wisdom? “Dream and believe.”
