Madarao, Japan, Jan. 29 (AP)–Yugo Tsukita became the first Japanese skier to win a World Cup men’s dual moguls event today, defeating Canada’s Stephane Rochon.
“I was lucky. But I think I got what had been missing from my skiing _ attacking the course,” Kyodo News agency quoted Tsukita as saying.
Tsukita beat world champion Janne Lahtela of Finland in the quarterfinals and defeated Canadian Jean-Luc Brassard in the semifinals before upsetting Rochon at the Madarao ski area in central Japan.
The victory boosted Tsukita up to fourth in this season’s standings with only one meet left in Italy. Rochon is in the top spot, followed by Lahtela and Johann Gregoire of France.
In the women’s competition, Germany’s Sandra Schmitt won for the first time in three tries this season, defeating Ann Battelle of the United States. Schmitt is third in the overall standings behind Battelle and Norway’s Kari Traa.
