This article isn’t intended to promote super-fast skiing or reckless behavior on the slopes. Instead, it’s designed to identify the fundamental skills you’ll need to stay in control as you gain the confidence to pick up speed. All of us encounter situations where we find ourselves skiing faster than normal; these tips will help you stay calm.

In Figure A, Felix McGrath, a five-time national champion and current University of Vermont ski team coach, demonstrates the athletic stance and skills that are ideally suited for high speeds. At right, Felix and I demonstrate “fast” and “slow” techniques. Here are six tips to ski faster:
