Two Grand Resort and Condo Hotels Open at the Canyons, UT

This is Alaska, after all. Be prepared for steep, long pitches. The good news: The mountain is basically at sea level (the base elevation is at 250 feet) so you don't have to worry about high-altitude problems. And you can hike and ski all day with lungs like a superhero. In this photo: Dave Magoffin takes an air near Alyeska's Christmas Chute.

Park City, UT, Mar. 7--This month, the American Skiing Company (ASC) has opened two new properties at the Canyons Resort, UT. The Grand Summit Resort Hotel and the Sundial Lodge were recently greeted with open arms at the transformed Utah ski area located outside Park City.

"The opening of the hotel at the Canyons represents the delivery of our sixth quartershare real estate project," said Scott Oldakowski of Grand Summit resort Properties. "These projects will offer owners the opportunity to combine the benefits of slopeside vacation home ownership with the conveniences of a full-service hotel."

The Grand Summit Hotel is a 500,000 square-foot quartershare condo-hotel that offers 360 rooms at the base of the Flight of the Canyons Gondola. The four-diamond Resort Hotel features restaurants, lounges, a health club, an outdoor pool and spa, and more than 15,000 square-feet of meeting and banquet services.

However, the Grand Summit Resort is not the only talk of the town. ASC's Sundial Lodge welcomed its first guests this past December 1999. The Lodge offers 150 condominiums ranging from the traditional hotel-style rooms to one and two bedroom and Penthouse suites. Each room includes its own whirlpool tub, a kitchen or kitchenette, and access to all hotel amenities. In August 1998, the Sundial Lodge sold out in ten-and-a-half hours, a ski industry record.

"The Sundial Lodge is the most successful real estate release in Utah's history," said Philip Grant, vice president of real estate sales and marketing for the Canyons. "Now guests are stepping in to enjoy their benefits and permanently privileged location within this luxurious property."

In the past three years, the Canyons has been transformed from a small, down-home, local mountain to one of the nation's largest resorts. ASC has tripled their terrain and upgraded the mountain with the industry's most modern lift system. Now, ASC looks to give the destination skier an opportunity to enjoy the Canyon's improvements with four-diamond lodging.

"The Canyons has already gained the reputation for offering some of the finest skiing in the nation," explained Blaise Carrig, managing director for the resort. "Now, we're also able to offer guests the convenience of ski-in/ski-out accommodations and unparalleled access to year-round recreation."
