Salt Lake City, UT, Jan. 13 (AP)–A couple skiing the backcountry were killed in a 1,000-foot-long avalanche near The Canyons resort north of Park City.

The bodies of a 47-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were found in deep snow about 20 yards apart at the base of Square Top, a peak in the Wasatch Range.

The names of the victims were withheld pending notification of kin.

They were reported missing Tuesday after they failed to pick up their 4-year-old boy from a day-care center, said Kim Peterson, a resort spokeswoman.

The man was wearing an avalanche locator beacon and had other safety equipment with him, but the beacon’s signal apparently was too weak to be of any help to searchers, television station KUTV reported.

Avalanche deaths are infrequent in the Wasatch Range but not unknown due to the dramatic temperature changes that can make the snowpack unstable.
