Whistler Cup: Gold, Silver, Bronze for U.S.

Whistler, B.C., April 7, 2001--Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y./New York Ski Education Foundation) became the first U.S. skier at the ninth Air Canada Whistler Cup to collect a gold medal when he won the K-II slalom Saturday by nearly a second.

In other races, Max Hammer (Jackson, WY/Jackson Hole Ski Club) took silver in the K-I one-run, giant slalom and HannahCametti (Manchester, NH;/Pat's Peak Ski Club) earned GS bronze.

More than 300 skiers from 18 nations are racing in the Whistler Cup events. U.S. skiers had 16 top-15 finishes Saturday- the second day of racing for the K-II (J3 in U.S. age classification) and the first day for K-I (J4s, ages 11-12, in theUSA).

Competition concludes Sunday with a second GS for the older group, which saw its scheduled super G changed Friday to agiant slalom because of a lack of snow at Whistler Mountain, and a slalom for the younger skiers.
