Heavenly Ski Resort, Lake Tahoe, Calif.November 8– Heavenly Ski Resort received as much as a foot and a half of snow above 8,200 feet overnight after a winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service developed into a massive weekend winter storm. Mother Nature began unleashing her fury at 5 p.m. yesterday, and as of 8 a.m. today, fresh snow continues to bury the mountain. With a series of fronts gaining strength off the coast of the Pacific Ocean, forecasters are predicting snow to fall throughout the weekend.
“A massive pacific storm is bringing wave after wave of snow to the High Sierra and that means plenty of snow for regional ski resorts,” explained Chris Larson, regional meteorologist. “With a top elevation of 10,067 feet, Heavenly could see between three and five feet of snow by the time this storm begins to move out on Sunday”.
As the massive storm system makes its way through the Lake Tahoe Basin, Heavenly employees are preparing for a November 22, 2002 opening date.
“We’re in the final countdown and this storm should make for excellent conditions Thanksgiving weekend. In less than 24-hours we have received a foot and a half of snow up above,” stated Blaise Carrig, COO of Heavenly Ski Resort. “And, since the majority of our skiing takes place above 8,000 feet, we anticipate winter coverage on the upper mountain.”
In addition to the natural snowfall accumulations, Heavenly Ski Resort’s extensive snowmaking system has been blanketing the mountain with snow. In the past ten days, snowmaking crews have made enough snow to bury 34 acres two feet deep. The combination of natural and machine-made snow will create optimal early-season skiing and snowboarding conditions at Lake Tahoe’s largest ski resort.
Skiers and riders can take advantage of November’s mid-winter conditions for a fraction of the cost. Early-season packages include Heavenly’s Ski FREE package. Skiers and snowboarders receive three days at Heavenly and three nights’ lodging for the price of two. Package prices start as low as $149, per person, and are available from November 26, 2002 through December 19, 2002.
