Wintergreen, VA, Feb. 7--In a region better known for its Civil War tours, skiing in the South was almost an anomaly. But, in 1976 when Wintergreen Ski Area in Virginia opened with a dirt road and six trails the skiing bug caught on.
"Twenty-five years ago we burst on the scene with something unique to the Mid-Atlantic region and since then, we have gotten bigger and better," said Dave Zunker Director of Public Relations at Wintergreen.
In their opening year, Wintergreen boasted 90,000 skier visits and they've been growing ever since. Now an upscale, four-season resort, Wintergreen maintains all the amenities that a southern-belle ski resort should have.
Today, Wintergreen averages 130,000 skier visits per year, has 90 skiable acres, 19 trails, a golf course, a spa, and lodging.
In celebration of turning 25, Wintergreen is hosting an Anniversary Snowblast on March 11-12. This fun, family event includes a live band, crazy races, contests and a 25th reunion for people returning to the resort.
