Innsbruck, Austria Feb. 3, 2004 (AP) — World Cup ski star Benjamin Raich of Austria will be sidelined about two weeks after a crash left him with bruises, whiplash and a concussion.
He was injured Sunday during a super giant slalom in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany, and was flown by helicopter to the Innsbruck University Clinic. Raich is second in the overall standings with 918 points, four behind countryman Hermann Maier. He will miss at least the next two races, a giant slalom and slalom this weekend in Adelboden, Switzerland.
“He had a pretty bad concussion,” Dr. Reinhard Mittermair told Austrian state broadcaster ORF. “It is clear that he was knocked unconscious during the crash because otherwise he would have tried stopping himself with his arms.”
Mittermair said Raich, a specialist in technical disciplines, most likely could return for the Feb. 14-15 races in St. Anton, Austria.
