Youngbloods: Doug Coombs

Steep Skiing Camps Worldwide, Valdez Heli-ski Guides

Doug's a low-key, personable guy, but skiing with him can be the thrill of a lifetime. At the first World Extreme Skiing Championships in 1991, Doug bested the field with a perfect crystallization of the fluid, aggressive, North American steep-skiing style pioneered a decade earlier by the likes of Scot Schmidt. These days, Doug's less concerned with winning prizes than he is with hunting down great terrain, which he does¿clients in tow¿at his camps in Europe and Alaska. Employing local guides, he instructs low-expert skiers and better on steeps technique and backcountry safety, then takes them out to rip terrain where, in Doug's words, "there are no controlled environments."
