Usually, there’s no contest: Colorado’s ski resorts win the race to open every year. And true to tradition, the usual suspects—Wolf Creek, Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Loveland—started spinning their lifts in late October and were the first to usher in the new ski season. But this season, there were other horses in the race thanks to a freak storm that dumped multiple feet—feet—of snow in California. Welcome to the party Mammoth, Palisades Tahoe, and Boreal.
