It’s no secret that outdoor sports are super popular right now. Backcountry skiing equipment has been flying off the shelves since last spring, and unless you put your name on a waitlist for a bike this winter, you’ll probably have to wait until next winter to get one.
With this rise in popularity comes the opportunity to use one sport as a means to another. Professional bike rider Maxx Chance and pro skier Johnny Egan did just that this past spring by linking up a bike to ski mission from their homes in Bozeman, Mont., to the top of Mount Blackmore. Because the access road to Mount Blackmore’s trailhead is closed until late spring, the duo had the road to themselves for the ascent and descent to the trailhead at Hyalite Reservoir. The mountain looked pretty empty during their ski ascent and descent as well.
The entire adventure was documented in the film “Means to Ascend.” Created by Micah Robin and presented by Sage Titanium Bicycles and Marker Dalbello Völkl, the film premiered last week in Bozeman and is now available online. It’s sure to inspire the adventurer in everyone to combine their favorite outdoor activities and do something especially rad before all the snow disappears this summer. Or, as Chance says in the film, “Everyone who rides bikes, start ski touring.”
