Big Mountain's Super Series Begins

Big Mountain, MT, Feb. 1–The women’s alpine Super Series resumesthis week with speed races at Big Mountain, Montana. The event kicks offTuesday, February 1 with a super G and moves on to a pair of downhillraces on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5 on Big Mountain’sToni Matt course.
The races were originally scheduled to be held January 29-31 atSnowbasin, Utah, but less than adequate snow and weather conditionsforced the change of venue.
The Big Mountain races will be the final set of events before thewomen’s Super Series culminates with the championships February 7-10 atDeer Valley and Park City, Utah. It will also be the first speed racesof the series. Two slaloms and two giant slaloms were run atBreckenridge, Colorado in November.
Currently in the overall standings, Slovenia’s Alenka Dovzan is in thelead with 202 total points. Dovzan was third in both Breckenridgeslaloms and placed eighth and fourth in each of the giant slaloms.France’s Christel Saioni follows with 180 points and German SimoneBehringer is third with 175 points.
The top American is Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO) in fifth with 143 points,followed by Kristina Koznick (Burnsville, MN) in sixth with 118 points.Fifteen-year old Julia Mancuso (Tahoe City, CA) is also in the top-10with 104 points, good for ninth place.
Among those slated to race the speed events for the U.S. is Jonna Mendes(Heavenly, CA), Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) and Alison Powers (Fraser,CO). Mendes was the top American finisher in a pair of downhills in St.Moritz, placing 12th and 20th in December. She also took 21st in a DH atCortina d’Ampezzon, Italy last week, a race that Clark finished 19th.Powers has been successful on the Europa Cup circuit as of late, winninga SG and placing second at a DH in Haus, Austria.
The Super Series is the U.S. portion of the NorAm series. Prize money is$2000 for first place, $1000 for second place and $500 for third place.
The men’s Super Series concludes February 25-27 with speed races atSnowbasin.
