Dynastar’s key new collection for 2001-2002 is called Intuitiv. As the name suggests, these skis are meant to provide effortless performance, so much so that the skier doesn’t have to think about technique-it becomes intuitive, instinctual. Most of the skis in the collection use Dynastar’s Autodrive construction, which utilizes traditional sidewalls underfoot for grip and cap construction at the extremities for ease of turn initiation. The skis also have wider waists for soft snow versatility, turned-up tails for slipping through moguls, and extended sidecuts, a feature said to give shorter skis the stability of longer skis.

The company’s marketing plan combines grassroots programs with media exposure. The centerpiece of the grassroots effort is a series of on-snow demo days for shop employees called Autodrive Tours. “Mostly it’s a day of just ripping around the mountain and having fun so the shop staff will know what Dynastar is all about,” says product manager Tait Wardlaw. There will also be increasing support for Dynastar-sponsored racers, freeriders, and new schoolers, Wardlaw says. And you’ll see more Dynastar skis in ski movies.

The bottom line: “Our skis are built in Chamonix, France, and the brand reflects that image of authentic mountain skiing,” says Wardlaw.

Speed Collection
Dynastar’s Speed collection is designed for “on-road,” packed-snow performance where high-speed stability, good grip, and maneuverability are key. There is a new version of the successful SX. Called the Autodrive Speed SX, it uses the same construction as the old SX with a new extended sidecut, a round tip, and a lightweight, polycarbonate Catalyzer plate. Wardlaw calls it a “lighter, easy-going version of the current Autodrive Speed Carve.” Also new is the Speed SX, which has the same construction as the old Speed SX with a new sidecut and a new rounded tip. It’s “the lowest pricepoint ever offered under the SX name,” says Wardlaw.

Unchanged: Speed STC (for slalom racing), Autodrive Speed Course (GS racing ski introduced in the fall of 2000), Autodrive Speed Cross (versatile on-road, all-mountain ski with a Titanal Catalyzer plate), Autodrive Speed Carve (all-mountain carving ski that won SKI Magazine’s Ski of the Year award).

Intuitiv Collection
This new collection, the focus of the Dynastar line for 2001-2002, is designed to provide high-performance skiing with little conscious effort. The models are intended for a broad range of conditions from groomed to powder and for a broad range of skiers. All but one of the skis in the category feature Autodrive construction. The flagship model is the Intuitiv 74, an Autodrive “crud-buster and powder weapon” with a small polycarbonate plate under the heel and V-hull “canoe” tip for stability in difficult snow. The ski comes pre-drilled for Look Pivot bindings. The most versatile ski in the group, and “a ski you can sell to anybody,” is the Intuitiv 69C, which is meant for the “core constituency” of intermediate through expert skiers. With Autodrive construction and a 69-mm waist, the 69C has a short polycarbonate plate under the heel and carbon fibers in the fiberglass weave for hard-snow grip.
New: Intuitiv 74, Intuitiv 69C, Intuitiv 69 (a softer, easier-going version of the 69C), Intuitiv 69L (women’s-specific ski in the group with Autodrive construction, Catalyzer plate, and forward binding mounting position), Intuitiv Vertical (non-Autodrive, value-priced ski with extended sidecut).

Agyl Collection
Like the Intuitiv group, the Agyl (say “agile”) collection “is all about skiing well, skiing easily, skiing without having to think,” says Wardlaw. The graphics are in the same spirit as the Intuitiv collection, and all the skis are wide to facilitate balance, and they have extended sidecuts for easy turn initiation. The middle two-thirds of the ski is stiffer than most beginner/intermediate skis to provide secure fore-aft balance. All the skis in the category have turned-up tails for maneuverability, especially in moguls.
New: Agyl Sup (pronounced “agile soup”), Agyl Plus (a beginner through intermediate ski with the same lively construction as the original Dynastar Speed SX), Agyl Omega (novice-intermediate ski with Dynastar’s classic Omega rib in the middle third of the ski to make it higher performing), Agyl (a “soft and smearable” novice ski).

Youth Collection
This is Dynastar’s collection for tricks and youthful hi-jinks in moguls, terrain parks, and halfpipes. Most of the skis in the collection are unchanged or only slightly tweaked.
Modified: Assault (mogul ski with new graphics), Concept (same chassis as Candide but softer-new graphics), Snap (value-priced version of the Concept-new graphics).
Unchanged: Candide Pro (pro model for halfpipes, terrain parks, and big air).
