Coming off a historic win in the downhill on Friday, Italian Dominik Paris wasn’t exactly favored to win in Saturday’s super-G. Wearing bib 16, the 29-year-old Red Bull downhill specialist maintained very close yet slightly slower interval times than the leader, Matthias Mayer of Austria, until the finish line. Paris’ time of 1:29.59 was a mere 0.01 seconds ahead of the Austrian super-G Olympic gold medalist, and would remain the fastest time of the day.
With this super-G win and his three downhill gold medals on the Stelvio (2012, 2017, and 2018), Paris now has four FIS World Cup gold medals in Bormio, the most of any athlete at this venue. He also joins the ranks of Michael Mair and Werner Heel as the third Italian to win a super-G race in Italy. With his third place finishes at Lake Louise and Beaver Creek earlier this season, Paris is poised to continue moving up in the FIS World Cup points rankings going forward.
The racer wearing bib 17, who skied immediately after Paris, also made it onto the podium for third. Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who won the Val Gardena super-G, earned his 10th FIS World Cup podium appearance by finishing 0.46 seconds slower than Paris. Mayer’s second place was his first podium of the season, and he credited the difficult course as a contributor to his success. “We need more of these races,” Mayer said after the race according to the FIS website. “I really like these conditions.”
The American ski team continues to have inconsistent super-G results. Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) was the top American finisher in 22nd, 1.98 seconds off the winning time. Steven Nyman (Park City) was just behind Cochran-Siegle in 23rd, 2.14 seconds behind Paris. Tommy Biesemeyer (Keene, N.Y.), Ted Ligety (Park City), Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley), and Wiley Maple (Aspen, Colo.) finished 41st, 42nd, 48th, and 55th, respectively. See full Bormio super-G results.
