Skiing and Fireworks on the menu for the 4th of July
You thought skiing was over? Not so fast—thanks to the West Coast's wild winter, you'll be able to celebrate your independence from summer's heat by sliding on snow this holiday.

If you’re anywhere near California or Oregon this Independence Day, ditch (or delay) the barbecue and grab your skis. The West Coast received such truly enormous amounts of snow this season that winter is still going on at these four resorts, which are just as psyched about 4th of July skiing as you are.
Squaw Valley, California
For only the fourth time in Squaw Valley history, skiers will be able to shred the mountain on Independence Day. Squaw is celebrating this occasion with an extravaganza called Freedom Fest, featuring all the traditional 4th of July activities, like a fireworks show and parties at the hot tub (with Lake Tahoe in the distance). But the highlight is a no-brainer: It’s the all-day skiing and riding, on top of this year’s total snowfall of 714 inches.
Mammoth Mountain, California
Mammoth has several festivities lined up for the country’s birthday, including a pancake breakfast, a parade, fireworks, and of course, making a few turns. Fun fact: January 2017 was the snowiest month in Mammoth’s history, so to celebrate, anyone who bought lift tickets during that record-breaking month skis free on Independence Day. And thanks to a recent June storm, the resort now plans to keep its lifts spinning past the 4 of July into August, making this season one of its longest ever.
Mt. Bachelor, Oregon
After its third-snowiest winter on record, Mt. Bachelor will re-open July 2-4 for three days of celebratory skiing and riding. Dubbed JulySki, this traditional celebration is held whenever conditions permit—such as right now, for instance. This year, Mt. Bachelor’s Sunrise and Summit lifts will be spinning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., marking the resort’s ninth JulySki in its 58-year history.
Timberline Lodge and Ski Resort, Oregon
Timberline Lodge Ski Resort consistently boasts the longest season in the country—as it’s tough to have a season longer than Timberline’s regular 12-month schedule. So while being open on the 4th is no big deal for Timberline, it’s still a great place to get in some holiday turns. And if you’re looking to check a few life-list boxes this Fourth, head here for glacier skiing (Palmer glacier) and volcano skiing (Mount Hood).
