Stowe, Vermont
If the walls of the historic Green Mountain Inn could talk, they’d tell of fashionable guests who, in the mid-1800s, helped establish Stowe’s reputation as a popular mountain resort. They would reminisce about famous visitors, such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Lowell Thomas and Gerald Ford, not to mention a friendly ghost who’s rumored to tap dance on the floors. As it is, they bespeak the inherent gentility and foretell the hospitality that lies within.
With its red brick façade and white, 19th-century porches, Green Mountain Inn has become a local landmark. Thanks to a complete restoration (a project that took place to honor its 150th anniversary), the setting combines the tasteful, country-style elegance of the inn’s early days with complete modern-day comforts and conveniences.
All totaled, the inn features 78 guest rooms and suites, the majority of which are located in the main residence. The décor includes early American-style wallpaper, stenciling and draperies, as well as reproductions of 18th-century furnishings. The adjacent Mill House (situated on the historic site of the Burt Lumber Mill) has eight luxury suites. And starting this month, The Mansfield House, behind the Mill House, will begin accepting guests in 22 rooms and suites outfitted with everything from fireplaces to DSL Internet access.
Mornings, skiers will be tempted to stop by the inn’s dining room for a hearty breakfast before making the trek up Mountain Road to the resort. Après-ski options include a dunk in the heated outdoor pool, a stop by the health club for a massage or a simple loll by the fire. For dinner, there’s no need to go any farther than the famous Whip Bar & Grill downstairs. Check out the collection of antique buggy whips, sip a local microbrew and sup on specialties (maple pork chops, steak au poivre) from chef Steven Truso’s bustling open kitchen.
