Any mountain that’s a current or former host of a Freeride World Tour is a mountain that belongs on your bucket list. Kirkwood, located 35 miles southwest of the Lake Tahoe resorts, is just such a place. The Cirque, site of the FWT competition in 2013, is permanently closed, but no worries, there are plenty of other adventures to be had.

Experts head straight up Chair 10 to The Wall, the iconic, steeply pitched ridgeline that the resort is known for, to test themselves on mandatory 20-foot airs and plentiful chutes. Kirkwood is also the happy recipient of the K Factor, a weather phenomenon that historically graces the 2,300-acre resort with the region’s best snow. Factor that in during your vacation planning.
