Think of it as summer camp grown up. The rambling Mountain Top Inn in Chittenden, Vt., about 25 minutes from the Killington ski area, is a verdant, 500-acre playground of hills, pines and vistas with plenty of room for kids of all ages to roam. Mike and Maggie Gehan are your hosts here, and they play the role with aplomb, steering guests this way to the driving range, that way to the riding stables or badminton courts, all the while imparting warm hospitality.

Water-lovers will be tempted to swim, fish or paddle the lake, while fishermen can pull trout from the well-stocked pond. New England tradition and style abounds in the Mountain Top’s 35 rooms, each appointed with Colonial and Shaker furnishings. If you have a yen for solitude, book one of the charming cottages, where horses wander over from the pasture.

Summer resort packages start at $196 and include all activities. A hearty Vermont-style breakfast and full dinner is available for an additional $42 a day.
