Like a worn leather sofa, the historic Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch just keeps getting better with age. Located 9 miles south of Stanley, Idaho, and 50 miles from Sun Valley ski area, the hand-hewn log structure was built in 1930 as an “invitation-only” hunting club. Today, guests (everyone from doctors to geologists) put their high-pressure careers on hold and set their sights on a simpler way of life. While the four lodge and 17 cabin rooms are rich in atmosphere-with fieldstone fireplaces, willow and log furnishings and hand-sewn quilts-there are no televisions, radios or phones.

With the Sawtooth National Recreation Area for a backyard, activities such as whitewater rafting on the Salmon and Payette rivers, overnight horse pack trips in the White Cloud Mountains, hiking, biking and fly-fishing are just minutes away. Or, you can stick close to home and soak in the ranch’s hot springs swimming pool until the dinner bell lures you in for a five-course, western-themed meal. A three-night stay at the ranch is $96 per night; weekly rates are $616.

All rates include lodging, breakfast, dinner and use of all ranch facilities.
