If it weren’t for the sign out front, and the bill for your stay, visiting the Mad River Barn would feel like going home. Step inside the wood paneled, 19th century barn, and collapse into a comfy couch beside a crackling fire. The moose head mounted to the wall above welcomes you, and young kids run by in pursuit of a yelping puppy. An older couple plays checkers in the corner, and tired skiers stomp snow from heavy boots.
In addition to a cozy atmosphere, The Barn serves much-needed comfort food to tired skiers. After a powder day at nearby Sugarbush or Mad River Glen, sit down to dinner ($14-21) on long tables in the downstairs restaurant. The Barn serves one family-style meal each night. Be sure not to miss their spaghetti and pizza with fresh baked breads.
The rooms are nothing special, but wood paneling and mismatched, hand-sewn quilts will make you feel like a houseguest in the home of longtime owner Betsy Pratt. Pratt is a native Yankee, dedicated Mad River skier, and owner of the mountain from a time before shareholders.Wake up to the smell of a complimentary home-cooked Vermont breakfast. If it looks like an icy day on the mountain explore the 800 acres of snowshoe and cross-country ski trails right in the back yard.
