Aspen, CO, Nov. 30, 2001-Mountain Sports Media (MSM), publishers of SKI, SKIING and Warren Miller Entertainment, inducted the 10th Mountain Division into its Hall of Fame last night during the Hall of Fame Banquet at MSM’s 30th annual Ski Industry Week held in Aspen, November 27-30.

Pete Seibert of Vail and George Gage of Telluride received the award on behalf of the 10th. The 10th Mountain Division was honored for its efforts in creating interest in the sport of skiing as well as the Division’s role in building the ski industry in North America after serving in World War II. All troops were honored, from those who fought in World War II to the troops currently active in Afghanistan.

“For more than 60 years, the 10th Mountain Division has played a key role in our sport,” said Andy Clurman, President, MSM. “Given the events of this year and the group’s role in Afghanistan currently, it seems only fitting to honor their achievements.”

Born on July 13, 1943, at Camp Hale, Colo., the 10th Mountain Division was taught to fight and survive under the most brutal mountain conditions. The 10th saw action in World War II in Italy and the Alps. After the troops returned home in November 1945, its veterans were instrumental in the postwar growth of skiing. Some of their achievements include: creating ski magazines, improving ski equipment and building ski lifts; founding ski resorts, including Vail and Aspen, CO, Sugarbush, ME, and Whiteface Mountain, NY as well as opening countless ski schools. Since that time, the 10th Mountain Division has seen action in Desert Shield and Storm, Somalia, Haiti and Bosnia. Currently, the 10th Mountain Division has been called into service in Afghanistan to fight the war on terrorism.

Past inductees into MSM’s Hall of Fame include Warren Miller, Alex Cushing, Hannes Marker, Dick and Miggs Durrance and Georges Salomon.
