Waterville Valley, NH, Aug. 6, 2001–The inaugural Capaul Classic, a golf tournament designed to raise funds for remodeling the home of U.S. Ski Team Coach Georg Capaul who suffered a loss of reflex motion in his legs in June, will be held Sept. 5 at nearby Owl’s Nest golf course in Thornton.
A coach for many years at Waterville Valley resort before joining the U.S. Ski Team staff fulltime, he returned home July 26 after five weeks of rehabilitation at The Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Capaul and his wife Janet, who have a son and daughter, are in the process of having their home modified to handle his wheelchair.
The first Capaul Classic will have 36 four-member teams competing in the 18-hole golf tournament with a variety of prizes (longest drive, shortest drive, top men’s/women’s/mixed foursome, etc.). There also will be a luncheon and other activities.
“We’ve had a great response already, especially from people who aren’t golfers but want to participate, whether they just have lunch or participate in the silent auction or one of the other contests. It’s not just a golf tournament,” said Debbie Moore, marketing director for Waterville Valley and a member of the Capaul Classic organizing committee.
Among prizes or silent auction items: a week at Grand Targhee ski and summer resort in Wyoming, including lodging at the private penthouse suite of George Gillett (former chairman of Booth Creek Partnership, which owns Waterville Valley); four tickets (plus air transportation, lodging and dinner) to a Montreal Canadiens hockey game (Gillett recently bought the Canadiens); a one-week golf or ski vacation at Colorado’s Beaver Creek resort; and, among other prizes, a one-week stay in Orlando next April.
Capaul was born in Switzerland but came to the USA in 1974. He raced pro and coached at Waterville Valley; starting in the late-Seventies, while serving at racing director at the resort, he also was an associate coach with the U.S. Ski Team for seven years before joining the staff fulltime in 1986.
