VILAMOURA, Portugal – (News Release) – The International Ski Federation (FIS) awarded the 2011 World Freestyle Ski Championships Thursday night to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and Deer Valley Resort, making the Utah resort the first site in history to host the championships a second time.
The historic announcement was made before about a thousand delegates to the biennial FIS Congress.
“Deer Valley is one of USSA’s great partners and continues to provide leadership in staging the finest of world-class events, said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. “Deer Valley showed its capabilities by hosting the Olympic freestyle competitions plus alpine’s slalom races in 2002, freestyle’s 2003 World Championships and, of course, the freestyle World Cup every winter.
Resort President Bob Wheaton added, “It’s a great honor for Deer Valley to be chosen by FIS as the first site to hold the World Championships again. We appreciate that FIS trusts us with such a major event. At the same time, our partnership with USSA continues to help advance our sports and this is one more major step forward.
In addition, other World Championships sites for 2011 announced Thursday night included: Alpine – Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (last hosted in 1978), Nordic – Oslo, Norway (last hosted in 1982) and Snowboarding – La Molina, Spain (first time).
